Morning Has Broken

The water lapped gently against the side of the ship as we floated silently along the smooth, peaceful surface of the bay. A soft blue sky with wispy, white clouds swirled in to erase the deep, crimson sliver of the horizon. In an hour or two the city would awake, having missed this phenomenon. The flags flapped in the slight, morning breeze, the last bit of night lingering in the air. The buoy ten feet away from the ship bobbed sleepily in the water, preparing for a day of crashing waves and surfers.

The glowing yellow sun crept over the black shapes, a gentle reminder that it was another day of work, play, laughter, and light. The bright yellow invitation would draw thousands out of their homes, a flurry of footsteps hitting the pavement, cars honking, and children laughing. I stood looking out, my fingers curled around a chipped ceramic coffee mug, breathing in the crisp air before it would be tainted by a mélange of exhaust smoke, today’s catch and other smells. The day had begun.
